Portfolio Artist Statement Online Information ![]() ![]() The personal reflection I have in my art is an appreciation of what differences there are when we are alone and when we are with others. Each of us carries within us an ongoing history of where we've come from and what drives us to pursue that truth of what we are. Some are obsessed by what they perceive as acceptable and with others the obsession with the outer image of what "should be" acceptable. Someone alone is waiting, thinking, enjoying the quiet. Another is attempting to melt into the surroundings, feeling safe. The haircut allows one to feel better, to get away from the self-doubts and let someone else listen to our thoughts. The chess game in the cafe is the idea of winning even when true-life experience might be the opposite. Are we sharing coffee with a friend or are we busy on a cell phone while our friend waits? I now sketch furiously, watching the non-exchange and yet hearing the warmth of true relating at another table. People meet and connect. Other cafe patrons study or create away from outside world. A woman alone emotionally on the edge? The man at the counter is pre-occupied what he is thinking? Look out the window!! Observe the reflection of the people around us. Who shall I sketch, who will I let in.
I'm driven to record day to day life in my Art journal. Most people love to be drawn. As an artist I can see the wonderful stories they share. The aloneness we feel and the precious moments shared with others in barbershops and cafes. It is a special quiet. A personal moment... |
