TRANSLUCENCE:
The capacity to allow the passage of light, but not to permit a clear view of any object. Literally, to "shine through."

The works in this series are indeed translucent, comprised of mixed media on acrylic panels. Many of the pieces pivot on their wall mountings, encouraging interaction by the viewer and challenging the perception of "front" and "back." The acrylic ground provides transparency, refraction of light, and the virtual elimination of edges. The ability of light to meld layered imagery into a single gesture, as well as the mobility of the pieces, suggests the ambiguity of different viewpoints.

The work is intensely personal, drawing upon images and emotions surrounding my relationship with my daughter, born with a congenital heart defect in 1990. These pieces reference both botanical drawing and archaic images of the human circulatory system. The contrast of flowing, branching imagery against hard-edged manmade material addresses the play between alleged medical certainty and the burgeoning garden of human hopes and fears. The layering of images, suffused with light, produces an air-water-earth effect almost topographical in nature. Thus the creative journey leaves behind a shifting map that celebrates the semi-seen, the ambiguous, and the contradictory.
