Artist Statement

In my work I have always used the figure as a way to communicate themes of connection, interaction and communication. In my most recent work I have been investigating these themes in a very literal way. By doing drawings of hands and fingers tied loosely together with strings, I am able to investigate the fragile connections that take place when people meet, interact and connect. The finished pieces resemble the string games that children play.
In a string game it's two hands agreeing to be connected that allows the creation to happen between them. A slight amount of tension is also a necessary aspect. If either hand releases the creation collapses.
When we connect with another person on any level we enter an agreement that allows a relationship to begin. The participants determine the level, depth or complexity of the relationship and a little bit of tension always makes things interesting. These connections take many forms and can be fantastically complex or simple to the point of near nonexistence.
