Her serene designs often evoke complex and inner landscapes. Mark-making, scratches, cuts and tearing back to earlier layers of color or raw canvas bring texture and depth to her work. Using increasingly thick layers of oil and collage materials- old music, papers of various weights, tapes and other materials, Phelps creates paintings of unusual and subtle coloration.
